REPLICA - CLOTH THANK YOU BAG JULY 19th
REPLICA - CLOTH THANK YOU BAG // A VIRTUAL WORKSHOP for intermediate to advanced sewists,
REPLICA - TY Bag this month is in association to my Yeiser Art Center Artist Residency and funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
SUNDAY JULY 19th, 2:00-5:00pm CST //
As we continue to spend more time home we are learning how to be more resourceful and creative in our time and what we have access to. This Virtual Workshop aims to help you stay empowered with what you have to create in your own home.
I have been teaching my beginner level sewing class, SEWING SURVEY for three years this month! The first day of class we make a THANK YOU BAG from our muslin textile. I made and created the THANK YOU BAG pattern we work from by copying an actual plastic THANK YOU BAG and making a paper pattern from it. By making the paper pattern you can make countless bags - doing away with all plastic bags. This is a great entry to learning how to make patterns for your soft projects.
This workshop will walk step-by-step through the pattern making process of a THANK YOU BAG and the making of the fabric THANK YOU BAG from cutting pattern to completion. Students will receive a Paper Pattern-Making Worksheet (PDF) the night before class to help during this workshop that will take place on ZOOM. The workshop will be recorded and students will receive a link to the video after the workshop. The recording link will be available for 5 days after the class. After you register for this workshop you will receive an email with supplies and JUNE 13th you will receive and email invitation to join the ZOOM workshop including a password.
SUPPLIES for making the PATTERN:
-plastic THANK YOU BAG for tracing
-piece of paper at least 30” x 30” -this paper needs to be bigger then the bag you are tracing so be mindful of how big your bag is and add 5” to all sides (this could be paper grocery bags taped together, copy paper taped together. Many of my first patterns out of fashion school were made from big magazine pages taped together. This is part of the resourcefulness we are accessing).
-tracing wheel
-ruler (I will be using a clear one, 24” long with metric & standard measurements, used for pattern-making)
-measuring tape
-pencil & eraser
-paper scissors or rotary and mat
-weights for keeping the plastic bag in place as we trace it
SUPPLIES for SEWING the BAG:
-WOVEN textile : 45” wide by 30” long (knit i.e. jersey will be more difficult to sew so please use a woven).
-Sewing Machine / hand sewing is optional too - just will take more time.
-Fabric scissors and thread
-pins for laying out pattern onto textile
ALL SALES FINAL.
*****Please note some of the bag examples on this page are made from textiles I have collaged together in the YARDWORK class. The bag that we create in the class will not go over how to collage textiles. Please feel free to sign up for YARDWORK first then take this class if you wish to have a bag that is collaged*
