The choice to view our waste in a circular fashion is both historical and modern, traditional and innovative; as seen in Amazonian terra preta, American floursack garments, and wool socks and sweaters darned by firelight – extending even into the logs in the fire itself– the wit and wisdom if choosing to use our own waste as a resource is thankfully ubiquitous across time and culture, and is especially relevant to artists and makers.
For this class, we will be centering our waste (textile remnants, excess clothing, garments to be mended) as our source material to explore and connect to ideas of material reuse, accessible mending techniques, and passed-down ancestral and familial traditions.
While we will be using machine and hand sewing as an entry point to consider waste as a resource the practices and ideas discussed will be applicable to all areas of our lives; holistically and creatively. During our time together we will create pieced yardage from our own textile excess to transform into the creation of a tote bag, learn four machine and hand sewn mending process to practice on our own garments and so much more. This is will also be a time to slow down, connect and share space with a community of like-minded creators and fiber curious individuals.
I have been using fabric donations as well as my own textile remnants to make one-of-a-kind garments and objects for the last 10 years. Our ability to make use of pieces from our past in order to generate the raw materials of our future is, I believe, our way forward.
***********************************************************************************
