The evening will involve the creation of fabric collages using a variety of hand sewing techniques, both experimental and formal. This is a time to share space with others, to pursue creative curiosity in an open-ended manner, and to experience the sense of peace which attends handwork with needle and thread.

Devoted to the healing process of sewing rather than to a specific product, the workshop is a resource for those persons who are feeling creatively blocked and looking for a new direction, or wanting to connect to a community through a shared creative practice, or wanting to focus on their own mindfulness. Collages can be created on garments or soft objects you already own or started from scratch during the evening. There are no rules.

This workshop is open to anyone over the age of 13. No sewing experience is required; participants are encouraged to help each other, to share their projects, and to celebrate each others’ work throughout the evening.

Please supply your own fabric scissors as well as any additional sewing notions (thread, sewing pins, embroidery hoop, fabric remnants, linens, garment) which are sacred to you. I will supply textiles from my studio, a variety of thread, needles, and safety pins. *This will be a collaborative creative experience and the sharing of tools will be part of the experience.

What sewing can do for your health:

STRESS RELIEF: Sewing encourages mindfulness and reduces stress and anxiety. The meditative action of sewing encourages positivity and feelings of relaxation. Concentration on one particular task allows a person to become immersed—leaving other worries behind—and to experience a true sense of peace.

HAPPINESS: Physical activity stimulates the release of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. These three chemicals play an important role in the regulation of your mood.

BRAIN GROWTH: Creative activities such as sewing promote new connections between neurons in the brain, effectively combatting mental deterioration.
